How do I stop Google mail from pre-empting my Username when I log on to Gmail?

When I open the Google Mail webpage and go to sign in, my full username appears after I type the first character. I wish to prevent this from happening, as I frequently use Google on computers other than my laptop. I have gone into Tools-Options-Personal Stuff-Remove saved Passwords etc; I have also gone into Tools-Options-Under the Hood-Clear Browsing Data-Empty Cache etc, but I have had no success. It's a small problem but I'd appreciate some help. Thanks.
